When I wrote the African Mask nearly twenty years ago, it was with the cozy certainty that slavery was ended in the western world. Abolished and never tolerated again. Gradually, I’ve become aware that slavery does exist in underground forms, taking shape as forced prostitution and forced labor, with the new name human trafficking.
